Posted: Thu 9:41 UTC Post subject: RE: What is most dangerous, Paraglider vs Hangglider? HG tend to damage their arms and heads, paragliders their legs and backs - obvious given the flying positions. paragliders tend to have accidents associated with strong thermals, although the rate of ankle damage from tripping while walking up the hill is astonishingly high. Sailplanes have land out problems and the racers put creases in their wing from excessive loadings. The accident rate at the Oshkosh fly in is horrendous, if you count all the accidents of people on their way to and from the event. GA tend to suffer human-factor accidents - pilots getting blasé. Hanggliders have lots of accidents at take-off (getting turned into the hill) and landing (whack.). The kinds of accidents are different too. Of course, you can make any of them horribly dangerous - acro, proximity, fly-ins, strong thermic conditions - all increase risk. The real answer seems to be that there is no significant difference in safety between HG, PG, Sailplanes and GA. There are lots of statistics but none of them are very reliable.
